One common repair that is needed is to stop the refrigerator from leaking water inside the Ice box. The newer model refrigerators Like Samsung and LG, seem to have some design flaws that older models did not have. These newer models can need expensive repairs not long after purchase. You would expect that your appliances would last and work like new for at least five years. Well, if you have a Samsung, LG, or Whirlpool refrigerator you might be in for repairs before 2 years have elapsed.
The most common call we get is for a refrigerator leaking water inside the ice box. This leaking water is due to the drain line being clogged. The drain gets clogged from ice and a call to the repairman is what is usually needed to fix this problem till it happens again! That's right even after you have this repaired it will most likely happen again. This is because with the way that refrigerators are designed today the line will likely get clogged again. New models of refrigerators Like Samsung, LG, Whirlpool etc... all have a computer controlled automatic defrost system in place that periodically defrosts the evaporator coils in the ice box. These coils get extremely cold, and air is cycled through them to cool the freezer and the refrigerator. The older model refrigerator and freezers needed manual defrosting every month or two to prevent the coils from icing over but the way they were made to drain made it impossible for the water drain line to clog from icing. Even though you bought a product with a design flaw, and you want to save on a repair call you can fix this problem yourself, but you'll need some tools and time to do it. This repair can cost 250 dollars if you have to use a repair man.
Tools you will need to repair this appliance from leaking are a ratchet and socket set, screwdrivers, and a steam machine.
How to repair the clogged drain line on newer model refrigerators.
This repair is not complicated and is actually pretty easy but can be time consuming and you will have to empty out your fridge. So first you will want to open two doors on the top of the fridge and disassemble the fridge. You will need to remove all the shelves and the drawers. Next you will need to remove the evaporative coil’s cover panel. This panel will likely be iced over so that is why we need the steam machine. You will need to de ice the panel before it will come off. To de ice the panel you will want to inject some steam into any opening you can to get some steam behind the panel. Once you have melted enough ice out from behind the panel you should be able to get it off once you have removed all the screws or bolts holding the panel in place. You can remove those by using your sockets or screwdrivers depending on if it has bolts or screws holding it in place. Once you have removed the panel you will need to steam drain line out so the water will start draining again properly. The drain is a little hole that is right below the evaporator coils that you will need to steam out really well to unclog the drain. Get rid of any icing at the bottom of the evaporator coils water tray that collects the condensations and directs to drain out the proper channels.
After you have cleared out all the ice from clogging the drain you just have to put everything back together now. Put the panel back on, put the shelves and drawers back in. Hopefully by the time you are done none of your food has spoiled, maybe you have some ice chests you could put the food in while you were working or another fridge to keep stuff cold, but if not, you should be able to do this repair in about an hour or less.
