If you have power getting into the dryer, then the next step is to remove the back panel on the dryer. It will have some more bolts to remove the panel. Now locate the dryer's thermal fuse, it is a little fuse at the bottom of the dryer shown above. Now you have to test the fuse with an ohm meter. Set the multimeters to continuity or ohms and touch the leads together to make sure there is continuity. The ohms reading should be 0.00. If there is more resistance than you have a bad fuse. 9 times out of 10 when a Kenmore, Whirlpool or Maytag dryer won't turn on it is because this fuse is blown and just needs to be replaced. Now just order a new fuse off the internet and install it and replace all the panels and you should be good to go. You also might be able to find the fuse in a local appliance retailer like Lowes.
- The first thing you want to check with a dryer that is not coming on is if you place the dryer on to timed dry and press the start button. If this does not turn the dryer on, then open the dryer door and check the door switch. If the door switch does not click, then it is probably bad and causing the dryer not to start and will need to be replaced.
- The second thing to check if the door switch is working ok is the voltage coming into the dryer. You will need a multimeter for this check. On the back of the dryer where the power cord enters the dryer there will be small panel with ¼ bolts that need to be removed to access the power wires and electrical connections terminal. Take the multimeter and turn it to volts. Test the power wires and there should be one with 12o volts and another with 220 volts. The voltage should be plus or minus 2o volts to be within spec. If you have no voltage getting in here then you may have a wiring problem with the dryer cord or else there is no power coming from the plug on the wall. You can easily test the plug to see if there is any power coming out of it by using the multimeter or plugging in a lamp that you know works, if it does not light up in this plug then there is something wrong with the plug.
